about

Mug's new release (Mug 7”) continues an exploration of minimalist melodic patterns, while it also soaks the stripped back bones of their 2021 EP in a reverberant pool of delays, synthesisers and drum machines. Mug have performed their EP live over the past couple of years, aiming to push their creative and performative boundaries with improvisation and an ever changing live-band formation. The band usually includes Sam Lyons (Eggy, Thibault) and Miles Harding (CLAMM). After a long stretch of writing, Mug are set to release a whole range of new works, the first being the self-titled 7”.
Speaking about the opening track Scenes Replayed on Trains, Lily comments: “It’s a song about moving forwards, and grappling with the realisation that something beautiful has come to an end. We think that it’s a familiar feeling, being drowsy in the warmth of a train carriage thinking fondly over the time you’ve had with someone special in a place that you know you’re going to have to leave behind.” The track is accompanied by Who Makes You Laugh?, a minimal-wave song that explores similar themes of detachment and finality. On the recording and production of the tracks, Sam explains “...it was all done in my home studio, which at that time was more of a glorified garage. It was much more collaborative than the previous project, obviously being that we didn’t have to work remotely. We experimented with laying down every idea we had, and formulated melodies by chopping up and cutting/pasting the material we had on the computer afterwards.”

about

Mug Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne duo Mug are siblings Lily and Sam Harding. Their oblique melodic pop echoes the 80’s underground of Australia, while nodding to the world of Eurocentric art-rock.
